Tory Burch Chic Beauty Tips: Smart and Stylish

Q: How do you look chic when it’s cold? —Vanessa, Boston

A: “I love cozy sweaters with great details. Or try extra long gloves (perfect for coats with three-quarter sleeves), fur neckwarmers and chunky knit scarves.” —Tory

Tory Burch

Why we love it:
The ponytail is sophisticated yet low-maintenance. Perfect for parties.

Beauty tip: Smooth fly-aways at the hairline using a toothbrush misted with hairspray. (Editorial stylists do it all the time.) Don’t forget to conceal your hair elastic by pulling a narrow lock of hair from the underside of your ponytail, wrapping it over the elastic and securing it with a bobby pin. Instant chic.

Modern Sag Harbor Kitchen

I usually write posts about white kitchens, but this House Beautiful, Kitchen of the Month, is gorgeous!  The dark walnut wood kitchen is modern but not sleek.  It's owned by four brothers and their spouses who share this vacation home in Sag Harbor.  The house is located right on the beach and the sunshine bouncing off the water helps to keep this dark kitchen bright and light.

do it Delicious: Thanksgiving Leftovers

I stuffed myself yesterday, but my favorite part of Thanksgiving is the leftovers.  Turkey and all the sides seem to taste better to me the next day.  I agree with Jessica Seinfeld's post on her blog about why the leftovers may be important to have the next day.  She also put together a few ideas that you can do with your leftovers from your Thanksgiving dinner.  They sound delicious!

Jessica Seinfeld
As much as I love Thanksgiving, the best meal of the YEAR, in my humble opinion, is Thanksgiving leftovers on Friday. There is no pressure—no anticipation of the big meal and the epic cleanup after 20 people leave your house and no potential family squabbles to fear. Maybe then you can sit down quietly with a nice plate of leftovers, gently warmed, and enjoy the incredible bounty of Thanksgiving. You may even have the peace of mind to remind yourself of what you are thankful for.

Inspiration: The Holiday

I'm a chick flick kinda gal and The Holiday is one of my all-time favorite movies.  It's directed by Nancy Meyers, who by the way, is my all-time favorite director.  I love all of her movies and I'm sure many of you would agree with me!  Tonight I'm going to start my Thanksgiving baking (I'm only baking one thing...a strawberry shortcake) and I will pop in this movie and my husband will probably sit down and watch it with me.  You know how guys never say, "hey, let's watch a romantic comedy tonight", but my husband always ends up enjoying the movies with me.  Well, all of Nancy's movies are design inspirations and this movie is no different.  It takes place in two lovely settings, California and the English countryside.  The plot is wonderful and the scenery and decor in both homes is so inviting.

Here's a little synopsis of the movie I found on IMDd (spoiler alert).
In London, Iris Simpkins write a wedding column in a newspaper and has an unrequited love for her colleague Jasper Bloom. Nearby Christmas, she is informed that Jasper is engaged and will marry another colleague, and her life turns head over heels. In Los Angeles, the movie-trailers maker Amanda Woods has just broken with her unfaithful boyfriend Ethan and wants to forget him. Amanda access a house exchange website, and impulsively swaps her mansion for Iris' cottage in Surrey for the holiday along the next two weeks. While in Surrey, Amanda meets Iris' brother and book editor Graham and they fall in love for each other. Meanwhile Iris meet her next door neighbor, the ninety year old screenplay writer Arthur, who helps her to retrieve her self-esteem, and the film composer Miles, and they fall in love for each other.

Inspiration: HGTV Green Home 2010

I spent a little time this morning looking at photos of the HGTV Green Home 2010 and I wanted to share with you some of the rooms that I loved! Since I was fortunate to visit a HGTV Dream Home in the past, it's always nice to see what inspiration the designers create in each new home.  This green home in located in Plymoth, Massachusetts near Cape Cod.  Wow! What a great location!  Enjoy the tour.

House Tour Part 1

Welcome!  Here's Part 1 of my house tour.  I took a few pictures to share with you.  The interior is in transition right now because I'm saving up to purchase two sofas, a desk for my living room, dining table and chairs and area rugs.  It's not all going to happen right away but it should be done before the summer. Hopefully!

I did buy a white, Pottery Barn, slipcover to change the look of the existing sofa, which is dark green.  Makes the family room look so much brighter!

Inspiration: Cougar Town Set

Friends have approached me recently and said that I needed to watch Cougar Town because they knew I would love the set design and guess what folks......they were right!  I decided to do a little research about the show and found tons of photos on ABC and at Shorely Chic.  What I love, is that the series takes place in a fictional town, Gulf Haven, in Sarasota, Florida.  If you've ever been to Sarasota you know how gorgeous it is and the beaches are magnificent! With that said, the designers did an excellent job mixing solid and patterned fabrics, along with wicker and bamboo chairs and other beach house accessories.  The set really makes you feel like it's a coastal home and you can get tons of decorating ideas from it.

The decor in this show reminds me of the HGTV Dream Home 2008 that I visited in Key Largo, Florida with my mother.  Compare the two and you will see what I'm talking about. The sofa in Cougar Town and the Dream Home are both coral and there's also other pattered fabrics mixed in.  Beautiful!

I guess I will tune in next Wednesday while I'm baking for Thanksgiving!

Hable Construction

Hable Construction has been a favorite of mine for many years and recently we became friends on twitter.  I love their ultilitarian design and the simplicity of their durable fabric.  I also found that they offer some of their textiles and pillows at Pizitz Beach and Cottage.   Their online store has many beautiful items, such as pillows, pin cushions, small zippered pouches, printed artwork and much more.  This holiday season they have wonderful accents for your home and kiddos that is only available at Garnet Hill

I found this great website through Facebook and browsed through their page and instantly fell in love.  Everything that I've been dreaming of doing in my dining and family room, I found there on their site. I love all the white, comfortable slipcovered sofas and gray slipcovered side chairs.  The dining room tables, table lamps, artwork and other accessories are gorgeous, as well. All I can can is beautiful! They are located in Seaside, Florida which is located in the northwest. Stop by if you're in their neighborhood!

Insights on Displaying Family Photos

My husband recently suggested that we display more photographs of our kids when they were little.  I thought it was a great idea and went out searching for elegant, casual frames that will enhance the look and feel in our home and be a source of joy when we look at each picture of our children.  Finding the frames wasn't the hard part, though.  I quickly realized I wasn't sure on how to display them, so I went online last night and found great advice at

After reading their Q & A on frames, I now feel more confident in arranging the memories of our kids and family.  Here are a few photos that have inspired our new project.

Ralph Lauren Q&A

What are some ways to display a collection of art or photographs?

Unify a collection of in different sizes and subjects by framing them in the same way.  Hung together on a wall, they take the place of one large piece of art.  Even a close corner comes alive when artfully decorated with a framed collection; lean multiple frames of various sizes and finishes against the wall on a floating shelf for a chic collage affect.

What are some interesting ways to display my photos?

Pictures not only serve as holders of out favorite snapshots, but they literally provide an aesthetic framing to out favorite memories.  Don't let your photos get lost in their surroundings, though, and choose a frame that is simply timeless and elegant.  Wood makes for a beautiful and timeless framing choice, providing a subtle, neutral background against which your pictures will stand center stage.  Fill your home with them for a relaxed, gallery feel, or know that any classic frame always makes the perfect hostess or housewarming gift that any recipient with be thrilled to receive.

This photo is from a previous post I did on an Urban Beauty inspired by Something's Gotta Give.  I love the way these photos are displayed over the sofa.

The collage in this Coastal Living Idea Home really looks terrific.

Halloween Inspiration for 2011

I'm fully aware that Halloween for 2010 has come and gone but I couldn't resist giving you a headstart for next year's inspiration.  My previous post featured my friend's lake home and I promised you that I would post pictures of how she decorated her sideboard for Halloween.  It's colorful and beautiful.

There may be Halloween decorations still available at a discount in some stores.  I know what I'm looking for and it's a Halloween tree.  Love hers!

A quote from Kim
I just love color and not afraid to surround myself with it.

My Friend's Beautiful Lake Home

I would love for all of you to see my friend's beautiful lake home.  Kim and I met when our oldest boys were in kindergarten.  She was their roommom and later that year our boys played baseball on the same team.  Kim was a very busy wife and mother with four children and was always ready to help out in the classroom.  One fall day, she invited my son over for a play date and when I arrived at her jaw dropped! Not only was her home beautiful, but I was taken by how talented she was at decorating.  She had a elegant front porch with carved pumpkins spelling out each of her kids names, adorning the steps.  Her home just seemed so warm and inviting.  From that moment on we always had something to talk about; life, family and decorating.

Today, Kim still has a beautiful front porch and pumpkins adorning the steps for the fall, except now her house is situated on a beautiful lake in the middle of Florida. When, I asked her if she would send me a few photos (5-6) of her house so that I can brag about it on my blog, she gladly said yes.  Kim woke up early the next day took some shots and soon I received an email with 116 photos!  Her photography is outstanding and is another God given gift. Thanks Kim for taking the time. Your talent and treasures are inspiring.

Enjoy some of the lovely photos she sent me of the outside of her home.  Tomorrow, I will post some fun and inspiring pictures of how she decorated her sideboard for Halloween.

Thanksgiving Outside

There's nothing better than gathering with your family and friends and having a wonderful, delicious Thanksgiving dinner outside in the fresh air.  This year's Thanksgiving feast for us will be in Key Largo, Florida on the water.  The weather should be perfect and it's always nice to see the kids play on the dock and fish in between courses.

This weekend my husband and I were looking over great recipes for Thanksgiving and we decided since, we are not having the gathering at our house this year we will make a small dinner for the five of us, soon after.  Here are some recipes that we would love to make.  I think they are simple and refreshing and look absolutely delicious!
